Amidst a week of rain, Saturday, June 13th provided a bright spot for nineteem sailors who participated in the day sail out of Nelson’s Sailing Center in Island Heights, NJ. Cheered by the good weather and good company, all five boats took off by 10 AM. Winds were from the NE at approximately ten knots and everyone had a turn at the tiller. Four of the five boats headed south and grouped up at anchor in a small cove north of Cedar Creek for lunch, while one remained closer to the bridge taking advantage of the consistent wind conditions in that area.

Six hours of sailing flew by in a flash of sun on water, each crew attempting the perfect tack, telling stories of life and laughter, and skimming hands in the water at a fine heel. All boats were enjoying the last few minutes at the mouth of the river around 2:30, when some dark clouds suggested we head back rather than play a little longer. Skippers Brozek, Buckley, Hamer, Krakauer, and Rainey all agreed, and we returned our boats as planned by 3 PM. A few then headed directly home, but about sixteen of us headed over to the Lobster Shanty for the après-sail social hour on the back porch overlooking the river. We all toasted the great day and our skippers for making it a fun and educational day!
