SMALL BOAT DAY BARNEGAT BAY ISLAND HEIGHTS AUGUST 13, 2005

No need to travel far for great winds. Barnegat Bay has them, especially in the afternoon. Nelson's Sailing Center operates a fleet of sloops of 19 to 28 feet in length out of Nelson's Marina in Island Heights, New Jersey. On Saturday, August 13, 2005, our charter will start at 11:00 AM after a skipper's briefing at 10:00, and plan on returning by 5:00 PM. Given the usual winds on Barnegat, our float plan is to navigate east on Toms River, using our piloting skills to get past the shoals at Goodluck Point, and sail south on Barnegat Bay. The sail south is usually a beat or a reach. We may have lunch under way or on the hooks at Tices Shoal or at a cove north of Cedar Creek. A cooling swim may be desirable. The return sail north on Barnegat is usually a broad reach or run, but who knows from where the winds will blow. Returning into Toms River, we should have time to sail west past Nelson's on the scenic Toms River a ways before returning to Nelson's. CREW ARRANGEMENTS Each boat will have a crew of four, with one person designated as the skipper. The requirements for skippers on this trip are different than for our extended trips. Please contact the trip leader for more information if you are interested. Each boat's crew is responsible for coordinating the details of their own lunch and beverages. Crew rosters will be published in advance just like our multi-day sailing trips, but each crew is responsible for their own independent pre-trip meeting or e-mail/phone communication to work out their lunch menus and car pools. Directions and parking locations will be sent to each skipper for distribution to the crew. Car pools are recommended. THE BOATS There is no fleet of one designs for this outing. We will not likely have two boats the same. All are sloop rigged and tiller steered. Most have electric outboards. For information on Nelson's Sailing Center, visit their website. THE DETAILS This trip is open to all members of The Sailing Club as well as non-members. The cost of this event is $75. For this trip only, non-members may pay a membership fee of $5.00, which can be applied towards a full membership anytime during this sailing season. The trip price covers charter fees, insurance and fuel. Full payment is due with the reservations form. Checks should be made payable to The Sailing Club, Inc. and mailed with your completed reservation form. Reservations will be processed beginning on April 8, 2005 with a random draw of those received by that date. All reservations received after that date are on a first-come, first-served basis. An entire boat may be reserved with full payment for the boat, subject to boat availability and meeting the requirements for skippering on this event. The event will be held rain or shine, but in the event of extreme weather, a rain date may be scheduled. When signing up, be sure to indicate your crewmate preferences, if any.
