Antigua beach

Have you visited one of the premier sailing locations in the Caribbean? How about fabulous weather, good winds, pristine water, great snorkeling/diving, open water sailing, quaint local bars and restaurants on the beach, good company and great boats?

Well, here is your chance!

Antigua and Barbuda have become one of the premier cruising areas in the Caribbean, with the famous Antigua Race Week held every year in April (the week after we will be there) attracting thousands of sailors to the island. Why? Because it is the perfect combination of good sailing and fantastic activities. Antigua offers the largest variety and quality of anchorages of any of the Leeward Islands. You can sail for 2 or 8 hours, each day to different locations, then enjoy swimming or other water sports after anchoring in unspoiled bays that you think may only exist on postcards. Maybe dinghy ashore and walk across the sand to the perfect sunning spot, or visit one of the many beach bars in the area. Swim and snorkel among the many reefs that surround both islands. If you have any doubts about the beauty and what Antigua has to offer, visit their website at www.antigua-barbuda.org.

Antigua map

Our itinerary will have us sailing approximately 154 nautical miles around Antigua and up to Barbuda during 9 days. The trip to and from Barbuda will entail sailing on the open waters of the Caribbean, with an average of 15 to 20 knots of wind. Sailing does not get much better than that.

We have two 47-foot boats and a 43 foot boat reserved for this trip from Sunsail Charters at their English Harbor base. The trip starts with a pre-board on Thursday at 6 PM, April 10, 2008, allowing for boat checkout and mid-day departure to anearby anchorage in Nonsuch Bay on Friday. We plan to do partial provisioning from the charter firm to simplify the food shopping but allow for the meals we will want to eat ashore. Other than a stop at Jolly Harbor Marina for hot showers and any supplies we may need, we will be anchoring most nights. The trip ends at 9 AM on Sunday, April 20th.

If you like to sail, this trip is for you. If you like to lay back and enjoy the sun, pristine waters and good company, this trip is for you. If you enjoy fun people and parties, this trip is for you. If you want to get ready for the 2008 sailing season, this trip is for you. If you want to know what sailing is all about, this trip is for you. And, if you want to do next to nothing, we will make room for you.

The cost of the trip is $1225.00 per person (Skippers - $655.00). This price covers charter fees, boat insurance, fuel and travel insurance. Food, airfare and other incidental expenses are additional and will be handled by each boat’s crew. A $250.00 deposit is required to hold your position. Please make your check payable to The Sailing Club, Inc. and mail it, along with your completed reservation form , to Jeff Hamer at the address below. Reservations will be processed beginning August 3, 2007 with a random draw of those received by that date. All reservations received after that date are on a first-come, first-served basis. The balance of $975 will be due as follows: A second payment of $350 will be due November 1. A third payment of $350 will be due December 1, and the final payment of $275 will be due January 1, 2008.

A pre-trip meeting will be held at a time and place to be announced. All crewmembers should make every effort to attend in order to meet our crewmates, plan your meals and make travel plans.
