So what are YOUR plans for the Memorial Day weekend? Just another day in the recliner eating chips and drinking beer?  NO!  Get outside for a one-day beautiful sail on Barnegat Bay with old and soon to be new friends.

This will be the first of two day sails in Barnegat Bay.  We will start from Nelson’s Sailing Center on Tom’s River (www.nelsonsailingcenter.com).  They will provide us with boats that are sloop rigged and tiller steered.  All have outboards, mostly electric.  Our charter starts at 9:00 AM. after an 8:00 AM. skipper’s briefing, and will end by 3:00 PM.

As is typical for our Barnegat day sails, bring a lunch!  Dining is often underway.  Wind and current will decide where we head, and how far we can go  Sometimes we may find a cove where we can drop anchor.  Otherwise, it’s one hand for the sandwich, and one hand for the boat!  Perhaps you’ll get a chance to practice heaving to.  In the afternoon, as we return to Tom’s River, there’s often enough time to sail past Nelsons and sightsee some of the interesting homes along the river.

Each boat will have a crew of four, with one person designated as the skipper.  The requirements for skippers on this trip are different from our extended trips (please contact the trip leader for information if you are interested in skippering a boat).  Crew rosters will be distributed in advance just like our multi-day trips, but each crew is responsible for its own pre-trip meeting or email/phone communication to work out food and travel logistics.  Directions and parking locations will be sent to each skipper for distribution to the crew.  Car pools are encouraged

Upon our return to Nelson’s we will head over to a local restaurant for a casual social/cocktail hour to share our day’s adventures (restaurant details will be shared prior to the day of the sail).

Club-qualified skippers and first mates may reserve an entire boat with payment of $340 (four people), subject to boat availability.  The event will be held rain or shine, but in the event of extreme weather a rain date may be scheduled.  When signing up, be sure to indicate your crewmate preferences, if any.  This is likely to be a popular event, so don’t delay!

The cost of this trip is $85. The trip price covers charter fees, insurance, fuel, porta-potty on each boat, and appetizers at the post-trip gathering. FULL PAYMENT is due with the reservation form. Checks should be made payable to The Sailing Club, Inc. and mailed with your completed reservation form to Doug Otte at the address below. You must be a club member to participate. Reservations will be processed beginning on April 9, 2010 with a random draw of those received by that date. All reservations received after that date will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
