The Sailing Club, Inc.

The Sailing Club last visited Tilghman Island in October, 2002. We only had an afternoon to experience Tilghman Island Day and realized that we missed a wonderful event. The trip and lost opportunity faded from memory – until now!

We board our boats Thursday evening at the Annapolis Bay Charters located on the south side of Back Creek, less than a mile walk from the center of town. Annapolis is noted for its fine restaurants and the crew package will have recommendations about where we can meet and eat. Currently we have three Jeanneaus with three cabins and two heads. If there are enough early signups, we will try to get a comparable fourth boat.

We’ll depart on Friday morning to venture out into the waters of the Chesapeake Bay. Heading south with hopefully favorable winds, everyone will have a chance at the helm and handling the sails as we cruise past historic lighthouses and landmarks. Our destination is a late afternoon arrival at Tilghman Island.

We have scheduled this trip around Tilghman Island Day on Saturday and have slips reserved at the Knapp Narrows Marina for Friday and Saturday evenings. This will insure we don’t miss any of the activities ashore, no matter how late they may run. The marina is on the Knapp Narrows passage that makes Tilghman Island an island. A very short walk across the drawbridge – the most frequently opened bridge on the Chesapeake – and you are on the Island. Tilghman Island Day is a combination of a small town fair, flea market, waterman’s celebration, seafood festival, music-in- the park and a Chesapeake Bay good time! It draws tourist from all over for the one-day event. It is a great time if you like small town America on parade. Lot’s of good seafood, good local music, and unusual events like the anchor toss and contest between the local watermen to see who can pull out and then re-dock their boat the fastest. Sounds a little corny, but it is fun and different. If you want a taste of local bay area life, this will give it to you! The festivities are officially over by 5:00 PM, but the partying usual continues on long after that in the various local taverns.

We will depart Tilghman Island after a hearty and leisurely breakfast and spend the day sailing into various creeks along the way to a Sunday evening raft-up. This will be our traditional (though late) hors d’oeuvres night with lots of "boat-hopping", music, beverages and maybe even dancing, if you are up to it! The Club has discovered many unusual "dance floors" on the boats in the past! Some require very good balance and the total absence of good judgment!

On Monday we have an easy sail back to the marina, or do some boat drills until you are ready to head in. Clean up your boat and gear, say goodbye to your friends and head home – or to the nearest watering hole to swap stories about the trip!

The cost of the trip is $585.00 per person (Skippers - $305.00). This price covers charter fees, insurance and slip fees for two nights (minimum stay). Food, fuel, and other incidental expenses are additional and will be handled by each boat's crew. A $100 deposit is required to hold your position. Please make your check payable to The Sailing Club, Inc. and mail it, along with your completed reservation form to Bob Rainey at the address below. Reservations will be processed beginning on April 9, 2010 with a random draw of those received by that date. All reservations received after that date are on a first-come, first-served basis. A second payment of $260.00 will be due on July 15. Final payment of $225.00 will be due on August 31, 2010.

A pre-trip meeting will be held Monday, October 4, 2010 at 6:00 PM. The location will be provided with your confirmation notice. All crew members should plan to attend.

We look forward to seeing you on another exciting sailing trip. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Larry or Bob.
