Ahoy Mates!! Welcome back to Annapolis, America’s "Sailing Capital."

The early autumn season has always meant a much needed break from the summer heat and on to more comfortable days and nights. And for sailors like us, it is one of the last opportunities to take advantage of the Chesapeake winds that, as Walter Cronkite said; would bring us “to some of the most beautiful shores and towns you’ll ever see”….And you’ll want to ... Again!

Even though our last venture to Annapolis was last year, it draws us back with its distinctive charm and strong history. The city is on the aptly named Annapolis Harbor, making a stroll along the City Dock memorable. It is the capital of Maryland, and has the distinction of having the oldest continuously operating legislative statehouse in the country. Also, home to the United States Naval Academy and its 4000 Midshipmen, the buildings, grounds, museums and attractions of the Academy are number one on any visitors “to-do” list. A trip from the marina to town via water taxi is still the best way to get there.

Coincidently, on Columbus Day weekend, Annapolis will host the world’s largest boat show. So if you’re looking to get some ideas, check out the latest gear and equipment, or pick up some goodies for a price; you’re in the right place. If you’re looking for a little something out of the ordinary, stop by Chick and Ruth’s Deli for breakfast, the Pledge of Allegiance at 9:30, and a magic trick!

But, we will not get lost in the history and charm. We will spend most of our time on the water and, needless to say, there is more Chesapeake than can be covered in a three-day weekend.

In keeping with a bit of traditional theme; this years’ trip will feature “Un Noche de Havana.” We doubt if the winds will be strong enough to make it authentic, but during our raft up the evening’s cuisine will have some of the favorite dishes of Cuba, a few (now competitive) games of dominoes and cigars for everyone, if you choose.

Our adventure takes us out of the Severn River heading southeast down to Kent Point. After rounding Kent Island we will head northeast over to and around Tilghman Point, turning southwest and into a nice little area known as Tilghman Creek. This leg of the trip is about twenty-two nautical miles, so it will give us plenty of time to sail. Once there we will drop anchor, raft up and let the festivities begin.

The next day, after having an espresso or two, we head back on a reciprocal course to the Chesapeake Bay and turn northwest up the South River. Here we will find several well protected creeks to duck into; Harness Creek, Crab Creek, or Church Creek. The festivities continue with more Cuban fare and games.

Finally on day three with only twelve nautical miles back to Annapolis we will be able to have plenty of sailing or get back to the marina and head off for a bite to eat, Cuban of course, and a walk about town before saying hasta pronto.

There are no facilities at any of the places we are going to so plan accordingly for provisions.

The cost of the trip is $435.00 per person (Skippers - $220.00). This price covers charter fees and insurance. Food, fuel, and other incidental expenses are additional and will be handled by each boat’s crew. A $100.00 deposit is required to hold your position. Please make your check payable to The Sailing Club, Inc. and mail it, along with your completed reservation form, to Frank Riley at the address below. Reservations will be processed beginning April 8, 2011 with a random draw of those received by that date. All reservations received after that date are on a first-come, first-served basis. The balance of $335.00 will be due August 24, 2011.

Please note that sailing conditions are dynamic, that your safety, and that of your crewmates, depends on your good physical health and agility.
