On the Water Training

May 7 –8, 2011

Has it been a while since you‘ve set foot on a boat, hoisted a sail, lowered an anchor, approached a dock, maneuvered under power, or learned the ropes? Well, you’re in luck. The Sailing Club’s annual On the Water Training is here to help. This year we will be using Bay Sail Charters in Havre de Grace, Maryland. It will give us plenty of opportunities for slip work and sailing practice.

If you have participated in the past, you know it is a good time to refresh and hone your skills, and to keep current with club procedures. In addition, you will practice man overboard recovery, reefing, boat handling, docking, communications, and general safety skills. It’s a time to learn, and talk with those more experienced and also less experienced than you. Let us know what else you want to practice. Ask questions. Remember, you are not only helping yourself, you are also helping others have a safe experience when sailing with the Club.

The weekend starts Friday evening with arrival and boarding. We’ll dine out so we can get to know each another. Then it’s back to the boats for a chat about the weekend plans. On Saturday, we’ll cover communications and essential knots, and then dig into handling the boat under power. After everyone has had a chance to practice these skills, we’ll raise the sails to cover basic sailing concepts. Back at the dock it’s a boat systems overview. On Sunday, it’s anchoring and rafting, followed by more sail trim, points of sail, and man overboard.

Remember for those of you who need to keep your qualifications up to date, this would be a good time to invest in the Club’s training exercises.

The cost of this event is $285.00 per person. This price covers charter fees and insurance. Other incidental expenses are additional and will be handled by each boat’s crew. Reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis, and the FULL AMOUNT is required at signup. Please make your check payable to The Sailing Club, Inc. and mail it, along with your completed reservation form, to the address below.
