DOWN EAST – AY-YUH

Penobscot Bay is a crown jewel amongst Maine’s coastal regions. It is pristine and spectacular, with more than two hundred rocky islands set against the backdrop Mount Megunticook, Mount Battie, and the rolling Camden hills. On this trip we will embark on an adventure to explore the less traveled areas of this region and, for our first time, visit the town of Bar Harbor.

September is by far the best time of year to sail in Maine. The summer fog has given way to the autumn season’s brisk winds, the lobster catches are in full swing, and the tourists have gone home after the Labor Day holiday!

Sat. Sept. 6: Our trip begins in Rockland at the Johanson Boat Works with a noon boarding. After provisioning and checking out the boats, we can stroll the town looking for the perfect place to eat.

Sun. Sept. 7: An early departure will see us sailing east to Duck Harbor on Isle au Haute, about twenty-two nautical miles away. We’ll have dinner on board and an early sack time in preparation of a long sail tomorrow.

Mon. Sept. 8: Today we head to Bar Harbor, about forty-two nautical miles distant away, so it will be a wonderfully long sail, weather permitting. We will take slips at the Bar Harbor Municipal Marina and after refreshing showers, look for places to eat ashore.

Tue. Sept. 9: Lay day to give us time to further explore the town and surrounding areas, such as the Acadia National Park and Cadillac Mountain. Lobster dinner ashore.

Wed. Sept. 10: Today is another long day winding our way through many small islands, up Eggemoggin Reach, ending at Buck’s Harbor in Cape Rosier, about thirty-eight nautical miles away, where we will pick up moorings. We can then go digging for mussels for a delightful dinner on board.

Thu. Sept. 11: After a quiet night, we head to Belfast about seventeen nautical miles away, to visit our ex-Commodore Cecile McKenzie and explore this beautiful Maine town. Dinner ashore.

Fri. Sept 12: Time for a hearty breakfast in town and then a short sail to Cradle Cove, a short twelve nautical mile jaunt, where we can pick up a free mooring and dig for more mussels to accompany a “must-go” dinner.

Sat. Sept. 13: Today we have time to go sailing for a few hours before heading back to Rockland, a short distance away. Then we’ll clean up the boats and start the long trek home.

Estimated car travel time from northern New Jersey to Rockland Maine is about eight hours. There is also direct air service to Portland or Bangor, Maine from Newark.  A reasonably priced shuttle bus can then take you to Rockland in about two hours. Air service to Rockland’s airport via Boston is possible, but more expensive than other ways.

The cost of this trip is $650.00 per person (Skippers $345.00). This price covers charter fees, insurance and one night of slip fees. Food, fuel, moorings and other incidental expenses are additional, and will be handled by each boat’s crew. A $100.00 deposit and Release of Liability and Zero Tolerance Form must accompany your reservation form.

Please make your check payable to The Sailing Club, Inc. and mail it, along with your completed reservation and release forms to Bob Rainey at the address below. Reservations will be processed beginning April 12, 2014 with a random draw of those received by that date. All reservations received after that date are on a first come, first served basis. The balance of $550.00 will be due on July 23, 2014. The Club’s standard thirty-day cancellation policy applies for this event.

A pre-trip meeting will be held about two weeks before the trip, specific time and place to be announced. All crewmembers should make every effort to attend in order to meet your crewmates, plan your meals, and make travel plans.

Please note that sailing conditions are dynamic, that your safety, and that of your crewmates, depends on your good physical health and agility.
